About the Cavy

Cavy is the scientific name for what is commonly referred to as a "guinea pig".  Now days, cavies are quite popular pets. Though, very few people know the proper care for one. The cavy belongs to the Caviidae family. Despite their common name, these animals are not from the swine family, and did not originate in Guinea. The cavy originated in the Andes. Today, non domesticated cavies are still found in various regions of South America, usually in grassy plains. They are very social animals, and in the wild live in small groups. They travel together in herds and feed on various vegetation. They are Crepuscular and tend to be most active during dawn and dusk.

Cavies are also commonly kept in captivity as domesticated pets. The first cavy was domesticated in about 500 BC. Cavies make great pets for kids because they are very social and patient. In captivity, with proper care, cavies can live up to 8 years. They eat food made for rodents, but also enjoy grass and vegetables.
